My Story
The penny dropped for me at the age of 15 when my imagination was captured, no in fact ambushed by Dennis Potter’s Singing Detective. It was like a smack around the face. The relentless question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” had finally been answered. However it soon became apparent that although I had found the answer, the wit and wherewithal to bring my hollow ambitions to fruition was still far from my grasp. So, I bought a cheap second hand Cine camera, loaned some terrible books from the library and set about creating some incredible works of art. They were not incredible works of art… they were rubbish… of course they were, but I was learning, making mistakes and, even back then, developing a style.
After 2 rather unrewarding years of A levels I discovered a Diploma in Media Production and then followed that up with 3 years at the Film School at West Surrey College of Art where I graduated with a 26 minute film musical called “The Fourth Wall” inspired by the great man himself, a homage to Dennis. So when the chance to shoot a Bollywood musical sequence for a BBC Doctors episode a few years ago came along I felt like I’d gone right back to my roots, this was made doubly rewarding by the fact it received the ITV1 Soap Award for the Best Scene of 2018.
As a fervent ambassador for the Midlands, where I still live, I have been fortunate to work locally for much of my career. Starting out in Lifestyle & Factual at BBC Pebble Mill, and then into the drama department directing Doctors and then later Land Girls, Father Brown, Shakespeare & Hathaway and now The Sister Boniface Mysteries.
I am the very proud recipient of 3 Royal Television Society Awards for my work on Father Brown plus another for ‘The Awakening’ by Lol Fletcher.
I get enormous joy from my work and every script I read still excites me, the chance to interpret and bring them to life is such a privilege which I hope will continue for many years to come.
